Tanzania launches 758 telecom towers to expand connectivity
Government and private operators boost digital infrastructure, aiming to improve nationwide access and support economic growth
DODOMA, Tanzania (MNTV) — Tanzania has rolled out 758 new communication towers and expanded its fibre-optic infrastructure in a significant push to strengthen nationwide connectivity and accelerate digital inclusion.
The initiative, unveiled in the presence of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, marks a major step in the country’s efforts to modernize its telecommunications network and bridge the digital divide, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
A consortium of telecom operators played a central role in the project, with Yas Tanzania contributing roughly one-third of the total towers deployed. The company also upgraded its existing infrastructure from 2G to 4G using its own resources, enhancing both network capacity and service quality across multiple areas.
The large-scale infrastructure rollout is expected to provide more reliable and faster communication services to millions, enabling broader participation in Tanzania’s growing digital economy. Improved connectivity is also seen as critical for advancing sectors such as education, healthcare, and commerce.
Officials noted that extending high-speed access to previously underserved communities would help reduce inequality in digital access and create new economic opportunities across the country.
In addition to the towers, newly developed fiber infrastructure has been transferred to the government, reinforcing the backbone of Tanzania’s telecommunications system. This upgrade is expected to improve service delivery efficiency and support future technological advancements.
The project highlights the increasing role of public-private partnerships in driving infrastructure development, as authorities continue to work with industry players to build a more resilient and inclusive digital ecosystem.
