Syria’s president pledges justice, coexistence one year after Assad’s fall

DAMASCUS, Syria (MNTV) – Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa marked the first anniversary of Bashar Assad’s overthrow with a pledge to advance justice, accountability, and national reconciliation, as tens of thousands filled streets across Damascus and other major cities to celebrate the milestone. 

The anniversary comes one year after Sharaa’s forces seized the capital in a rapid offensive that ended more than five decades of Assad family rule and brought an abrupt close to a devastating civil war.

In a national address, Al-Sharaa described the moment as a “historic break” with the past and vowed to build a future rooted in coexistence and the rule of law. 

Fireworks, chants, and patriotic songs echoed across the country throughout the day, with celebrations beginning at dawn following special prayers broadcast from Old City mosques.

Al-Sharaa reiterated his commitment to transitional justice, stating that all individuals responsible for abuses and crimes during the conflict would face due process. 

The civil war, which began in 2011 after the violent suppression of pro-democracy protests, left more than half a million dead, millions displaced, and tens of thousands still unaccounted for after disappearing into detention during the former regime.

While the past year has seen achievements such as the restoration of Syria’s international standing and the easing of foreign sanctions, the government faces formidable domestic challenges. 

These include rebuilding institutions, restoring essential services, reinforcing security, and bridging deep social fractures after years of conflict. 

Al-Sharaa emphasized that national unity and collective effort are essential to consolidating stability and shaping a future that honors the sacrifices Syrians have endured.
