Pakistan launches Space4Climate initiative to boost climate monitoring
SUPARCO unveils GeoAI-powered platform to track emissions, disasters and environmental changes
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (MNTV) — Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission has launched a new initiative aimed at strengthening climate resilience through space-based technologies, officials said Sunday.
The program, called Space4Climate, centers on a GeoAI-enabled Climate Observatory — a digital platform designed to integrate satellite data, geospatial analytics and predictive modeling into actionable insights for policymakers, researchers and communities.
According to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations, the platform will monitor a wide range of environmental indicators, including atmospheric pollutants such as aerosols, sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, as well as greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane.
It will also track forests, glaciers, coastal dynamics, river systems and land use, along with climate-related hazards such as floods, droughts, heatwaves, extreme weather events, sea-level rise and glacial lake outburst floods.
Officials said the integration of satellite and ground-based data will support evidence-based policymaking and sustainable development efforts, aligning Pakistan’s climate strategy with global initiatives.
The launch comes as Pakistan faces increasing climate risks and is ranked among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
