Moroccan caftan officially recognized by UNESCO
UNESCO designation affirms Moroccan caftan as national heritage after long-running cultural dispute with Algeria
RABAT, Morocco (MNTV) — Morocco has achieved a major cultural milestone with the Fassi caftan officially inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, resolving a long-standing dispute with neighboring Algeria over claims to the garment.
Algeria had previously sought to include the Fassi caftan in its own UNESCO submission, but Morocco successfully challenged the claim, solidifying the caftan as a symbol of Moroccan identity.
The UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage approved the decision during its meeting in India, highlighting Morocco’s commitment to protecting its cultural heritage and expanding its global soft power.
Morocco’s submission, prepared by the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication and the permanent delegation to UNESCO in Paris, detailed the caftan’s history, craftsmanship, social significance, and the communities dedicated to its preservation.
The ministry described the recognition as a “new achievement for the kingdom under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, who continues to prioritise Moroccan culture and heritage protection.”
It emphasised that the caftan is more than traditional attire: it is a living emblem of Moroccan identity, preserved over eight centuries through master artisans, apprentices, and familial traditions.
Renowned for its intricate embroidery, luxurious fabrics, and regional craftsmanship, the Moroccan caftan continues to evolve as contemporary designers reinterpret it while respecting its traditional roots.
Worn at weddings, religious ceremonies, and major celebrations, the garment bridges past and present, keeping Moroccan cultural identity visible worldwide.
Moroccan artisans and cultural institutions welcomed the UNESCO recognition, noting that it not only secures the caftan’s place in world heritage but also reinforces Morocco’s influence in preserving and promoting its rich cultural legacy.
