Meloni calls Trump’s attacks on pope ‘unacceptable’
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has broken with President Donald Trump over his attacks on Pope Leo XIV
ROME, Italy (MNTV) – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has broken with President Donald Trump over his attacks on Pope Leo XIV, calling his remarks “unacceptable” and defending the pontiff’s right to speak out on war and peace.
“I find President Trump’s words regarding the Holy Father to be unacceptable. The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, and it is right and normal that he should call for peace and condemn all forms of war,” Meloni said in a statement from her office.
The remarks came after Trump launched a sweeping public attack on the pope, writing on Truth Social: “Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.” Trump accused the Church of choosing the American-born pope to manage relations with his administration, criticized him for opposing the Iran war and the Venezuela operation, and told him to “get his act together as Pope, use Common Sense, stop catering to the Radical Left, and focus on being a Great Pope, not a Politician.”
He claimed Leo’s current trajectory “is hurting the Catholic Church.” Meloni had earlier congratulated Magyar on his Hungarian election victory while also thanking Orban for past cooperation, suggesting she is navigating a careful path between her traditional allies and the shifting political landscape.
