Italy suspends defense pact with Israel amid strikes
Rome distances itself from Tel Aviv as criticism mounts over regional instability and attacks involving international forces
ROME, Italy (MNTV) — Italy has suspended the automatic renewal of its long-standing defense cooperation agreement with Israel, signaling growing unease in Europe over Israel’s actions and its close alignment with the United States in ongoing regional conflicts.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed the decision, stating that the move was taken “in light of the current situation,” a reference widely understood to include escalating violence in the Middle East and mounting international criticism of Israeli military conduct.
The defense pact, in force since 2016, covers extensive military cooperation, including arms transfers, defense industry collaboration, and training programs. Its suspension marks a notable diplomatic setback for Israel, which has faced increasing isolation as its military operations draw scrutiny worldwide.
Relations between Rome and Tel Aviv have deteriorated sharply in recent days, particularly after Israeli forces reportedly fired warning shots at convoys belonging to the UNIFIL, which includes Italian personnel. The incidents triggered outrage in Italy and raised serious concerns over the safety of international peacekeepers operating in the region.
In response, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani summoned Israel’s ambassador to Rome, while Israeli authorities retaliated by calling in Italy’s envoy in Tel Aviv following remarks criticizing attacks on civilians in Lebanon.
The diplomatic exchange highlights deepening friction between Israel and European partners, many of whom are increasingly unwilling to endorse or overlook aggressive military actions that risk wider regional destabilization.
The move has also sparked criticism inside Israel, with opposition leader Yair Lapid describing Italy’s decision as a major diplomatic failure for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government.
Lapid noted that even traditionally aligned governments in Europe are now distancing themselves, underscoring what he portrayed as a growing inability of Israel’s leadership to maintain key international relationships.
Meloni emphasized the need to prioritize diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the region, including reviving negotiations related to Strait of Hormuz and reducing tensions linked to the ongoing US-backed military escalation.
The decision is widely viewed as part of a broader shift, as European nations reassess their ties with Israel amid concerns over international law violations and the destabilizing role of US-backed policies in the region.
Analysts suggest that Italy’s move could encourage other countries to reconsider similar agreements, further isolating Israel diplomatically amid Israel’s growing violations of international law and order.
