Mamdani maintains strong lead as Wall Street-backed candidate enters race
Joseph Hernandez is motivated to enter NYC mayoral race by his disdain for left-wing policies championed by Zohran Mamdani
NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) – Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani continues to hold a strong lead in the New York City mayoral race, even as millionaire investor Joseph Hernandez launched an independent bid aimed squarely at defeating him.
Hernandez, a 52-year-old Cuban-born businessman, leads Blue Water Venture Partners, a healthcare and technology investment firm, and has founded over a dozen pharmaceutical companies.
He has positioned himself as Mamdani’s opposite, telling Fox News Digital: “I am the absolute polar opposite of Zohran Mamdani and what he stands for. I believe that hard work, education and grit are what makes you successful in this country.”
Since declaring his candidacy just over a month ago, Hernandez has raised around $300,000, relying on wealthy donors and networks tied to finance and healthcare. He has cast the election as a fight against what he calls a “big political machine.”
His platform centers on hiring 10,000 more police officers, expanding artificial intelligence in city services, and converting office space into housing.
Hernandez has echoed right-wing talking points about crime, claiming: “The city is not safe. You can’t ride the subways at night. Women get attacked on almost a nightly basis. People get robbed here. There’s no law and order — there is zero respect for law.”
For Mamdani’s supporters, Hernandez embodies the politics of fear and profit. They argue that pouring billions into policing will not address the real crises New Yorkers face — skyrocketing rents, a housing shortage, and the erosion of public services.
Instead, Mamdani has built his campaign around affordability, workers’ rights, and community-based safety, drawing energy from grassroots movements across the city.
While Hernandez has even filed a lawsuit to change the city’s voting system, polls show little impact from his candidacy.
A recent Siena College survey of registered voters confirmed Mamdani’s commanding lead in the race, reflecting the broad appeal of his vision for a more just and equitable New York.
