Russian Muslim summit seeks end to religious interference
Participants at Moscow conference urged interfaith dialogue to prevent religious hostility and use of religion in state affairs
MOSCOW (MNTV) — Participants at an international conference organized by the Spiritual Assembly of Muslims of Russia called for preventing the use of religion to interfere in the internal affairs of states and for efforts to prevent provocations that could lead to armed conflict, RIA Novosti reported.
In a resolution adopted after the conference, titled “Traditional Religions of Russia: Contribution to Strengthening Unity and Social Development,” participants called for efforts to eliminate the provocation of armed conflicts from global practice and urged greater use of interfaith dialogue to prevent hostility on religious grounds.
The resolution said participants considered it unacceptable to use religious factors to interfere in the internal affairs of states and supported the right of peoples to independently determine their spiritual and cultural foundations.
The international scientific and practical conference was organized to mark the 10th anniversary of SAMR.
Delegations from 40 countries representing BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, ASEAN, the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas attended, along with representatives from more than 60 Russian regions.
On Sept. 27, international participants were introduced to a project for an interfaith spiritual, educational and cultural center in New Moscow.
The project includes the Moscow Central Cathedral Mosque named after Mukhamedzhan Khusainov, described as Russia’s first mufti.
The SAMR conference is expected to become an annual event.
