Mamdani establishes Office of Community Safety, falling short of campaign vision
Zohran Mamdani has established the Office of Community Safety, a more modest version of sweeping city department he promised
NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has established the Office of Community Safety, a more modest version of the sweeping city department he promised during his campaign to transform how the city handles mental health crises and public safety.
Eleven weeks into his tenure, the new office — housed within City Hall rather than constituted as a standalone department — will develop prevention strategies for gun violence, domestic and gender-based violence and hate crimes, while focusing on neighborhood-level intervention and services for crime and mental health crisis victims.
Deputy Mayor Renita Francois will oversee it.
“Today is a day of ambition, a day where we commit to approaching public safety with the complexity and innovation that it deserves,” Mamdani said at the launch. He argued that police responses often inflame emotionally unstable situations, pointing to last month’s incident in which officers wounded a schizophrenic man who charged at them with a knife.
“For far too long, we have approached crime and safety by placing only ever-expanding expectations on the police department,” he said.
However, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch told the city council that only about 2% of 911 calls would be eligible for a non-police response, limiting the scope of any civilian diversion effort.
Brian Stettin, a mental health adviser under former Mayor Eric Adams, offered a measured assessment.
“I’m not seeing anything revolutionary. I’m seeing a consolidation of things that have been going on for years,” he said. “I’m still waiting to hear the big idea of how we’re going to do things differently.”
Supporters say the office represents an important first step, even if it falls short of the transformative vision Mamdani outlined on the campaign trail.
