Maldives win bronze in men’s netball at Asia Cup

HONG KONG (MNTV) — The Maldives has secured a bronze medal in a men’s netball tournament at the Asia Cup men’s netball tournament, marking the first time the country’s men’s team has competed internationally and reached the podium.

The Maldivian team claimed third place after defeating Japan in two matches, following early losses to Malaysia and tournament hosts Hong Kong. The competition featured four teams and was described by organizers as the first men’s netball tournament of its kind held in the region.

Men’s netball remains a marginal sport globally, with limited international infrastructure compared to women’s competitions, which are more established in Commonwealth countries. 

For Maldives — a small island nation better known internationally for tourism than competitive sport — participation itself represented a significant step into organized regional competition.

After opening the tournament with heavy defeats, the Maldivian side regrouped to secure wins over Japan, finishing with a bronze medal despite limited preparation under tournament conditions. 

Head coach Ema Abdul Sattar said prior to the event that the team faced uncertainty about the level of competition and had trained largely outdoors, while most matches were played indoors — a factor that posed additional challenges.

Sports analysts note that smaller nations often struggle to gain international exposure in niche or emerging sports due to funding constraints, lack of facilities and limited access to regular competition. As a result, regional tournaments can play a critical role in building competitive experience and visibility.
