Maldives explores digital economy growth with TikTok collaboration
Government discusses new digital revenue streams through TikTok, focusing on youth empowerment and smoother payment systems
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — In an effort to promote digital entrepreneurship, the Maldives government has engaged with TikTok to explore how the platform can generate new income opportunities for the country’s youth and emerging content creators.
The Maldives Ministry of Economic Development and Trade emphasized TikTok’s potential as a valuable tool for generating revenue, in alignment with broader goals to strengthen the country’s digital economy.
Efforts are underway to establish a range of online business avenues, with other platforms also under consideration as part of this initiative to unlock new income streams.
A key focus of the discussions was the introduction of a PayPal deposit and withdrawal service in the Maldives. Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, highlighted the challenges faced by digital entrepreneurs due to limited access to secure and reliable payment systems.
He noted that many Maldivian manufacturers and online business owners are hindered by the lack of seamless payment solutions, which often limit the growth potential of the digital economy.
Minister Saeed reiterated the importance of social media platforms, particularly TikTok, as accessible channels for income generation.
However, he stressed that the full potential of these platforms cannot be realized without resolving payment system issues.
The ministry revealed that further discussions are ongoing with regional offices to determine the best strategy for integrating TikTok into the local context. Minister Saeed also mentioned that the Chinese government has offered support to help facilitate these advancements.
