Kazakh students launch AI-powered newspaper
Journalism students create inclusive print and digital publications with full AI integration
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — Graduate journalism students at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University have launched AI-Tamyz, the country’s first Kazakh-language scientific and educational newspaper generated using artificial intelligence.
The publication, produced by Master’s students from the Faculty of Journalism, includes print, digital, audio, and video formats.
All articles, images, and audio-visual elements were generated using a variety of AI tools. To ensure accessibility, visually impaired readers can listen to article audio through QR codes printed on each page.
According to The Astana Times, the name AI-Tamyz is rich in layered meaning.
In Kazakh, “Aitamyz” means “We speak,” reflecting the publication’s mission to amplify scientific, educational, and social voices. “Tamyz,” which means August in Kazakh, evokes the harvest season—symbolizing the newspaper’s ambition to yield meaningful contributions.
The idea took root during a seminar on data journalism, where lecturer Kanat Auesbaiuly challenged students to create a project modeled after Italy’s first AI-generated newspaper, but in the Kazakh language.
“Fully producing it with AI was not easy due to limited Kazakh language support in most tools,” said editor-in-chief Nur-Altay Umirzak.
“We tested dozens of programs and created hundreds of prompts to reach our goal.”
The students used ChatGPT and GEMINI to generate text, WhisperAI and MicMonster for audio, and CanvaAI, DALL-E, and Midjourney for visuals.
Sound and music were produced using SunoAI, while layout and design were completed entirely within CanvaAI.
“We also generated jokes, poems, and fictional stories to explore the creative side of neural networks,” said content creator Zhumabek Motanov.
Release editor Aishat Naka said the team plans to work with IT faculty to develop software that integrates text, audio, and video content in Kazakh.
The student-led team plans to publish AI-Tamyz weekly or monthly, targeting university students, faculty, and researchers.
