Jordan to face Oman in decisive World Cup qualifier in Muscat
Victory and favorable result could secure Kingdom’s historic first World Cup berth
AMMAN, Jordan (MNTV) — Jordan’s national football team faces Oman in Muscat, in the penultimate match of Round 3/Group B of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers.
Jordan currently sits second in Group B and will qualify for the World Cup for the first time in its history if it defeats Oman and Iraq loses to South Korea.
Failing that scenario, Jordan’s qualification hopes will hinge on the final group match on June 10, when it hosts Iraq in Amman.
The Kingdom’s journey through the qualifiers so far includes a 4-0 victory over Oman, two 3-1 wins over Palestine, three draws against Kuwait and Iraq, a 1-1 draw and 2-0 loss against South Korea.
Speaking ahead of the Oman clash, Jordan’s Moroccan head coach Jamal Sellami acknowledged the challenge, stating, “We are facing a strong and improved team, but we are prepared and fully committed to achieving our goal.”
Forward Ali Alwan, who rejoined the squad after injury, emphasized the team’s focus: “We are aware of the responsibility and determined to get the result we need.”
The 2026 World Cup will feature an expanded format, allowing 18 Asian teams to compete across three groups in home-and-away fixtures.
The top two from each group will qualify directly, while others will move to a fourth round with a chance at an intercontinental playoff for a possible ninth Asian spot.
Jordan is competing in the third qualifying round for only the second time in its history and has already secured a place in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
The national team held a training camp in Dammam over the past two weeks, including a preparatory match against Saudi Arabia.
However, injuries and suspensions have affected the squad, with captain Ehsan Haddad sidelined after undergoing surgery and Mahmoud Mardi and Nizar Rashdan suspended.
On a positive note, key players Ali Alwan and Nour Rawabdeh have returned to the squad.
Star striker Mousa Ta’mari is expected to lead the attack, supported by forwards Yazan Nu’eimat and Yazan Al Arab, as Jordan aims to thwart Oman’s hopes and move one step closer to World Cup qualification.
