Iraq revives 5,600 factories to boost national industry, strengthen economy
Government efforts drive manufacturing revival and job creation, with further expansion planned
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Iraq has relaunched more than 5,600 factories over the past two years as part of a nationwide initiative to revive domestic industry and stimulate economic growth, the Iraqi Federation of Industries confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Federation Chairman Adel Akab, the relaunch of these factories comes as a direct result of sustained government support.
“The Prime Minister’s office is committed to supporting all projects equally, regardless of size, provided they contribute to national development,” Akab said in remarks to the Iraqi News Agency.
He added that new factories and facilities are being inaugurated weekly under the patronage of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani or his representatives.
The revitalization program targets a wide array of sectors including food processing, construction materials, and pharmaceuticals, with the government positioning local industry as a key engine for economic self-reliance.
The industrial sector’s resurgence is closely tied to progress in agriculture, trade, and education, Akab noted, stressing that sustainable development depends on the integration of these areas.
The Federation has emphasized the importance of coordinated policies and increased private-sector participation to reinforce the manufacturing base.
Recent government moves to bolster industry include export incentives and infrastructure investment.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani has also reaffirmed his administration’s support for local production, praising private businesses as essential partners in national growth during a visit to a food production facility in Baghdad.
In parallel, efforts are underway to formalize small and medium enterprises, reduce reliance on imports, and attract investment through improved regulatory frameworks.
The government’s industrial strategy is expected to continue expanding, with additional projects under implementation and new factories planned in key sectors to drive job creation and economic diversification.
