Iraq launches national telecom company with 5G rollout to boost connectivity
New venture backed by government entities aims to expand services and strengthen non-oil economy
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani oversaw the signing of an agreement to establish Iraq’s first national mobile telecommunications company, a major step in the government’s strategy to modernize the sector and roll out advanced 5G services nationwide.
The initiative, a key element of Al-Sudani’s economic program, will operate as a public joint-stock company with initial capital provided by three state institutions.
The institutions include State Employees Pension Fund, the Trade Bank of Iraq, and the General Telecommunications and Informatics Company, which functions under the Ministry of Communications.
Al-Sudani praised the ministry’s role in driving the project forward and called for swift completion of the necessary procedures to begin delivering services to citizens.
He described the venture as a “qualitative leap” for Iraq’s communications sector, which is witnessing rapid technological advances.
The Prime Minister stressed that the company will introduce competition to the market, ensuring citizens receive high-quality services that can support economic activities, education, and broader development.
He further highlighted that this is the first time three government bodies have come together to create a telecommunications provider in Iraq.
In addition to government backing, the company will be open for public subscription, allowing citizens to contribute to its capital.
Al-Sudani underscored that this inclusive ownership model represents a vital step in the government’s broader strategy to diversify Iraq’s economy and reduce reliance on oil revenues.
