Iran halts visa-free entry for Indians
Iran will suspend visa-free entry for Indian passport holders beginning Nov. 22 after a series of trafficking and abduction cases
TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — Iran will suspend visa-free entry for Indian passport holders beginning Nov. 22 after a series of trafficking and abduction cases involving fake job offers, India’s embassy in Tehran said Monday.
According to the advisory, criminal networks posing as travel or recruitment agents used the visa-waiver scheme to lure Indian citizens to Iran, where several were kidnapped for ransom upon arrival.
Iranian authorities have now paused the program to prevent further abuse.
Indian citizens will need visas for both entry and transit.
The embassy urged travelers to avoid unverified agents promising visa-free routes or onward passage to third countries.
The warning follows a May incident in which three men from Punjab — Hushanpreet Singh, Jaspal Singh and Amritpal Singh — went missing after landing in Tehran.
Their families later reported they had been abducted. Iranian police rescued them in June in Varamin, a city south of Tehran.
India continues to urge travelers to use verified channels when planning international trips.
