Iran opens limited family reunification visa for Afghans
Iran has introduced a limited family reunification visa for Afghans seeking to rejoin close relatives legally residing in the country
KABUL, Afghanistan (MNTV) — Iran has introduced a limited family reunification visa for Afghans seeking to rejoin close relatives legally residing in the country, offering a narrow avenue back for those separated by recent mass deportations, Amu TV reported.
Iran’s Office for Foreign Nationals and Immigrants Affairs said Afghans who previously held census registration cards— temporary IDs once issued to undocumented migrants — and were deported or repatriated may now apply for reunification visas if they have parents, spouses or children with legal status inside Iran.
Applications must be initiated by the Iran-based relative through designated kafalat (sponsorship) offices. The visa fee is €100, payable at Iran’s embassy in Kabul. Required documents include the sponsor’s residency permit, the applicant’s passport scan, and marriage or birth certificates.
Iran said the policy aims to “facilitate family reunification and ease migration challenges.”
The move comes as both Iran and Pakistan ramp up deportations of undocumented Afghans, citing economic strain and security concerns. Aid agencies say thousands are being returned without time to arrange travel for family members left behind.
Eligibility is restricted to relatives of individuals holding specific residency categories such as family passports, residency passports, the ‘Azmayesh 19’ card, or official residency booklets — documents many Afghans in Iran do not possess.
Iran hosts an estimated 3.5 million Afghans, both registered and undocumented, and has long struggled to balance humanitarian considerations with domestic pressures.
Applicants must remain in Afghanistan while their cases are processed; Iran has not clarified processing times or expected approval numbers.
