Every Cent Counts: Price Comparison of Top Ontario Grocery  Chains.

A local media outlet recently surveyed the top five grocery chains in Toronto to compare  prices on nine essential kitchen and household items.  

The five chains evaluated were:  

– No Frills  

– Giant Tiger  

– Walmart  

– Food Basics  

– FreshCo  

Before comparing prices, the survey team established several key parameters for the  study: 

– The focus was on regular prices rather than sale prices at all five stores to ensure a  level playing field for a fair comparison. 

– Where packaging sizes differed among stores, the survey used the unit price (also  known as price per item) to ensure accuracy in the results.

• The prices mentioned in this report were sourced from online consumer surveys, not  directly from the stores. The intention of sharing this information is to highlight the price  variances for similar products across different grocery stores, many of which are  located just a block or two apart. 
• It’s important to note that these pricing differences are not limited to the selected  items. This information is meant to serve as a starting point for consumers to conduct  their own research before making purchases, rather than to mislead anyone into  thinking that prices for consumer goods are uniform across all stores. 

Here’s the total price for all nine items bundled in a single basket at each store: 

– No Frills: $78.04 

– Giant Tiger: $57.30 

– Walmart: $65.78 

– Food Basics: $55.61 

– FreshCo: $75.41 

Summary: 

There is a significant difference between the total price at No Frills, the most expensive  option, and Food Basics, the cheapest. Shoppers can save $22.43 on all nine products by  choosing Food Basics over No Frills.
