Car explosion near Red Fort kills at least 13, injures over a dozen in Indian capital
At least eight people were killed and 20 others injured after a car explosion rocked a busy area near the Red Fort in India’s capital, Delhi
NEW DELHI, India (MNTV) — At least 13 people were killed and more than 15 others injured in a powerful car explosion near the historic Red Fort in New Delhi on Monday evening, according to police and local media reports.
The blast occurred around 6:50 p.m. local time (13:20 GMT) near a metro station close to the 17th-century monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s most visited landmarks. Witnesses described hearing a “loud noise” followed by flames engulfing several nearby vehicles.
Rescue teams and firefighters quickly reached the scene, extinguishing the blaze as paramedics rushed the wounded to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital. The Delhi Fire Department said multiple vehicles caught fire after the explosion, while police cordoned off the area and launched an extensive investigation.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha told reporters that the explosion appeared to originate from a slow-moving vehicle that had stopped at a traffic signal. “We are examining all angles, including the possibility of foul play,” he said.
Authorities have detained the registered owner of the vehicle in the neighboring city of Gurugram as part of the investigation.
The forensic team and a dog squad are combing the site for evidence, while police are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas.
Home Minister Amit Shah, who visited the blast site and later met the injured at Lok Nayak Hospital, said federal agencies were working closely with local police.
“We are exploring every possibility and will conduct a thorough investigation. The results will be made public soon,” Shah said.
Following the explosion, a high alert was issued across the capital, with intensified security checks at metro stations, government buildings, and major train terminals. Police in Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh also boosted security in response to the incident.
Though the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, Delhi Police have invoked India’s stringent anti-terror law to guide the probe. Officials said the nature of the blast would be confirmed after forensic analysis.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefed on the situation by the home minister and is monitoring developments, officials said.
The explosion marks one of the most serious security incidents in the Indian capital in recent years, reviving concerns about urban safety and potential terror activity near key national landmarks.
