Bangladesh asks India to extradite ex-home minister
Former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was convicted of death penalty over violence during 2024 mass protests that ended Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule
DHAKA, Bangladesh (MNTV) — Bangladesh has formally asked India to extradite former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was sentenced to death earlier this month for crimes against humanity over his role in the deadly crackdown on the 2024 mass uprising that toppled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.
The request was sent through diplomatic channels along with a copy of the verdict issued by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed said Tuesday. According to the Bangladeshi government, separate requests have also been sent seeking the return of other former officials believed to have fled to India.
Kamal, who served as home minister under Hasina, was convicted in absentia after the tribunal found him responsible for crimes committed during the nationwide protests that erupted in July 2024.
The demonstrations, initially led by students protesting public-sector job quotas, evolved into a broader anti-government movement before Hasina’s administration collapsed the following month.
Bangladesh’s interim government had launched a series of criminal cases against senior figures from Hasina’s former administration, accusing them of orchestrating a violent campaign against protesters that left hundreds dead.
The International Crimes Tribunal, originally established to prosecute atrocities committed during Bangladesh’s 1971 independence war, has since been tasked with trying alleged crimes linked to the 2024 crackdown.
The extradition request is the latest in a series of efforts by Dhaka to secure the return of former officials who left the country after Hasina’s removal from power. Hasina herself fled to India in August 2024 and has remained there despite repeated requests from Bangladesh’s interim authorities for her extradition to face multiple criminal investigations.
The issue has become one of the most sensitive points in relations between the neighboring countries. While Bangladesh has intensified efforts to bring former members of Hasina’s government back to stand trial, India has so far not acted on requests to return the former prime minister or other senior figures who are believed to be on its territory.
