Veolia signs contract to boost water services in Northern Jordan
Agreement aims to improve reliability, efficiency, and sustainability for 3 million residents
AMMAN, Jordan (MNTV) — Veolia has signed a four-year performance-based management contract with the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) to enhance water and wastewater services across northern Jordan, benefiting approximately three million people in the governorates of Irbid, Jerash, Ajloun, and Mafraq.
The initiative falls under the strategic oversight of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI) and seeks to strengthen operational reliability, service quality, and financial sustainability in a region facing mounting water stress.
Under the agreement, Veolia will provide operation, maintenance, and management support to Yarmouk Water Company (YWC), the public utility responsible for water supply and wastewater treatment across nearly 30,000 square kilometers.
The company will collaborate with YWC teams to improve daily operations, streamline billing and collection, and enhance customer service.
Philippe Bourdeaux, Executive SVP for Africa, Near and Middle East Zone at Veolia, described the contract as a demonstration of long-term commitment to Jordan’s water sector.
“By supporting Yarmouk Water Company, we aim to reinforce operational performance, improve service delivery, and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient water system. This project aligns with Veolia’s GreenUp program, providing practical solutions to preserve vital water resources for communities and the environment,” he said.
Eng. Raed Abu Al-Soud, Minister of Water and Irrigation, welcomed the partnership, emphasizing its alignment with Jordan’s National Water Strategy 2023–2040.
“This contract represents a significant step toward improving water and wastewater services in northern Jordan. Strengthening operational capabilities and utility performance will ensure more reliable services for citizens and sustainable management of water resources,” he stated.
Veolia will deploy management and technical experts to support core operations, rehabilitation works, and capital investment projects, with a performance-based focus on measurable outcomes including service reliability, cost efficiency, and enhanced revenue management.
The agreement strengthens Veolia’s long-standing footprint in Jordan, where it already manages major water infrastructure projects, including the Disi–Amman Operation and Maintenance Company, which supplies about 117 million cubic meters of drinking water annually.
It also operates the As-Samra Wastewater Treatment Plant, which produces more than 130 million cubic meters of treated wastewater each year for agricultural reuse.
With this new contract, Veolia continues to contribute to Jordan’s national water goals by improving operational efficiency, safeguarding scarce resources, and providing dependable essential services for northern communities.
