Mamdani poised for historic win as vote count begins in record-breaking NYC election
Independent data firm already calls victory for Mamdani amid celebrations at Brooklyn Paramount
NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) — Vote counting is underway in New York City’s high-stakes mayoral election, with officials reporting the highest turnout in at least three decades.
The city’s Board of Elections said that as of 9 p.m. local time (23:00 GMT), an estimated 2 million people had voted — the largest participation in a mayoral race since 1993, when Republican Rudy Giuliani defeated Democrat David Dinkins.
This year’s figure includes more than 735,000 early ballots, the highest ever recorded in a non-presidential election year.
Supporters of the candidates have gathered across the city to await results.
Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic frontrunner, is hosting his election night event at the Brooklyn Paramount, a historic concert hall that has filled with cheering supporters and volunteers.
His main rival Andrew Cuomo is holding his watch party at the Ziegfeld Theater in Midtown Manhattan, while Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa has chosen a restaurant on the city’s heavily Democratic Upper West Side.
Vote counting began immediately after polls closed, with Decision Desk HQ — an independent data provider — already projecting Mamdani as the winner, making it the first US outlet to do so.
If confirmed, the victory would make Mamdani New York City’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, marking a historic moment in the city’s political history.
