New book documents untold history of British Gujarati Muslims
600-page publication highlights early migration, women's voices, and cultural legacy through rare photographs and interviews
Authored by poet, journalist, and researcher Imtiaz Patel Varediawala (Tankarvi), the bookāBritish Indian Gujarati Muslim Communities: Early Settlers ā History and Heritageāis the product of more than five years of meticulous research. Launched at the Gujarat Today newspaper office in Ahmedabad, the event was attended by editors, designers, and local supporters.
Spanning 600 pages, the book features over 400 rare photographs, 91 interviewsāincluding many with women for the first timeāsix academic essays, and more than 30 letters of endorsement from scholars and institutions.
āThis is a tribute to the resilience, determination, and vision of our elders,ā said Imtiaz. āIt preserves their journey, their challenges, and their legacy with dignity and historical integrity.ā
The book places a special focus on the Bharuchi and Surti Vahora communities, tracing their migration from Gujarat to the UK and the ways they maintained their cultural and religious identity while contributing to British society.
Stories of early settlers are woven with historical context, giving depth to a community whose contributions have long been underdocumented.
Imtiaz emphasized the importance of including womenās voices in this historical account, calling their stories essential to understanding the full scope of community life.
More than 26 volunteers contributed to the project, which was developed as a grassroots, community-driven effort. āTheir collective effort stands as a living archive,ā Imtiaz noted, āsomething future generations can reflect on and learn from.ā
The author has also led outreach sessions in both India and the UK, collaborating with scholars, educators, and youth to promote awareness about the importance of documenting diasporic history.
āThis book is not just about the past,ā he said. āItās about preserving identity, values, and heritage for the future. Itās a legacy that connects generations.ā
We must take charge of our narrative. Research indicates that 92% of their Muslim coverage is negative. Help us change that.
