UN reports record settler violence in occupied West Bank
UN says attacks by Israeli settlers have surged to unprecedented levels, as occupation-linked impunity fuels widespread violence and displacement
JERUSALEM, West Bank (MNTV) — Violence by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank has reached record levels, with United Nations officials reporting more than 1,000 attacks this year and an average of six incidents per day resulting in casualties and extensive property damage.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), cited by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, said the scale and frequency of settler violence have now surpassed any previous annual record, reflecting a continued deterioration in conditions across the occupied territory.
According to the UN, recent incidents include attacks that left more than 30 Palestinians injured in a single week, alongside widespread destruction of homes, agricultural land, infrastructure and livelihoods in multiple communities.
Humanitarian data indicates that more than 2,200 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced this year as a result of settler violence and movement restrictions, while additional displacement has occurred due to demolitions carried out by Israeli authorities.
The West Bank remains under prolonged Israeli occupation since 1967, with more than half a million Israeli settlers living in settlements considered illegal under international law, alongside roughly three million Palestinians.
Critics argue that the expansion of settlements and the lack of accountability for settler attacks reflect a broader system of occupation that enables and protects extremist settler activity, while failing to provide adequate protection for Palestinian civilians.
They say repeated failures to prosecute perpetrators have contributed to a climate of near-total impunity.
The escalation in violence has taken place alongside the ongoing Gaza genocide by Israel and has since intensified tensions across the occupied Palestinian territories.
Observers warn that without international intervention and enforcement of accountability measures against the Israeli regime and Zionist settlers, the pattern of attacks and displacement is likely to deepen further.
