Israel strikes Syria air base, escalating regional tensions
Eight reported strikes damaged Abu Al-Duhur base, drawing U.S. and Turkish condemnation of Israel’s continued military actions
DAMASCUS, Syria (MNTV) — Israel launched eight airstrikes against Syria’s Abu Al-Duhur air base on Tuesday, damaging its runway and storage facilities in an attack condemned by U.S. and Turkish officials as a destabilizing escalation.
Syrian state broadcaster Ekhbariya, citing a military source, said the strikes hit the base in Idlib province, about 70 kilometers from the Turkish border, while local sources said no casualties were reported.
The Israeli military declined to comment, and Syria’s Defense Ministry did not immediately issue a response.
Tom Barrack, the U.S. special presidential envoy for Syria and Iraq, described the attack as an unnecessary escalation that would not advance regional stability, urging all sides to pursue restraint and engagement rather than further military action.
The strike marked Israel’s first reported attack on Syrian government assets since March and came amid its continuing campaign against Syrian military infrastructure following the 2024 removal of former President Bashar Assad.
Israel has repeatedly targeted Syrian territory, destroying major sections of the country’s military equipment and seizing land in southwestern Syria, actions that Damascus and Ankara view as violations of Syria’s sovereignty and obstacles to restoring stability.
Türkiye has accused Israel of seeking to weaken Syria’s new administration and undermine efforts to rebuild its military institutions, infrastructure and public services after years of war.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan earlier called for international pressure on Israel to respect Syria’s territorial integrity, while ruling AK Party spokesperson Omer Celik said Israel’s policies posed a major threat to peace and security across the region.
The latest attack also follows growing tension between Israel and Türkiye, which has provided military, diplomatic and institutional support to Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa’s government and is assisting the rebuilding of Syria’s armed forces.
