Türkiye, Iraq reaffirm commitment to expanding bilateral trade
Officials pledge to pursue $30 billion trade goal through investment, customs reforms and major cross-border infrastructure initiatives
ANKARA, Türkiye (MNTV) — Türkiye and Iraq have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic cooperation and increasing bilateral trade to $30 billion in the coming years, with senior officials agreeing to deepen investment, improve trade facilitation and accelerate joint infrastructure projects.
The commitment was underscored during talks in Ankara between Turkish Trade Minister Ömer Bolat and Iraqi Trade Minister Mustafa Nizar Jumaa, held alongside Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s official visit to Türkiye.
Following the meeting, Bolat said the two sides reviewed practical measures to expand trade, attract reciprocal investment and broaden economic cooperation.
Discussions also highlighted the strategic importance of the Development Road Project, which both countries view as a key transport corridor linking regional and international markets.
The ministers also explored ways to simplify customs procedures, improve transit trade and enhance coordination between their customs administrations to facilitate the movement of goods across the shared border.
Bolat announced that both governments plan to adopt a new roadmap for economic cooperation during the third meeting of the Türkiye-Iraq Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO), scheduled to take place in Türkiye during the final quarter of 2026.
He added that Iraq’s integration of the Ibrahim Khalil Border Gate into the ASYCUDA customs system is expected to improve border efficiency and support the shared objective of increasing trade volumes.
The Development Road Project is also expected to encourage greater investment activity, including the construction of logistics hubs and other transport infrastructure connecting the two countries.
Separately, Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu met Iraqi Transport Minister Vahab al-Hasani, emphasizing that closer cooperation in transportation would strengthen economic ties, support regional stability and advance the long-term strategic partnership between Türkiye and Iraq.
