Iran in close contact with Russia over Ukrainian attack on its ship
Iranian ambassador to Russia confirms special transit arrangements for Russian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz
MOSCOW (MNTV) — Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali said Tehran and Moscow remain in close defense coordination following a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, reaffirming the strategic partnership between the two countries, BORNA reported.
In an interview with TASS, Jalali said the Iranian and Russian defense ministries have maintained continuous communication regarding the incident.
“Due to the extensive scope of bilateral cooperation, officials from both countries — including representatives from the foreign ministries, defense departments and other relevant bodies — maintain regular and continuous coordination,” Jalali said.
He added that the ongoing contacts reflected the depth of strategic ties between Tehran and Moscow, particularly in addressing shared security challenges.
Jalali also said Iran would continue implementing a special transit mechanism for Russian vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz.
“Naturally, a special regime is established for friendly nations, and this mechanism will remain in place,” he said.
Asked about the possibility of the Yemeni Ansarullah movement participating in retaliatory strikes against U.S. military bases in the Persian Gulf region, Jalali said the group would make its own decisions.
“What matters to us is that Yemen and the Ansarullah movement are independent, and they will make their own decisions at the appropriate time,” he said.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Ukraine’s attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea “cannot go unanswered,” describing it as a violation of the U.N. Charter.
“[Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy has attacked an Iranian commercial vessel, killing a sailor. A blatant U.N. Charter violation done at Israel’s behest to drag Europe into its war,” Araghchi wrote on X after separate telephone conversations with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
“What the freeloader in Kyiv did CANNOT GO UNANSWERED,” he added.
According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Ukrainian forces struck the Iranian-flagged vessel early Saturday while it was sailing from Russia’s Astrakhan Port to Iran’s Anzali Port. The ministry said one sailor was killed, another was wounded, and the ship’s bridge was destroyed in the attack.
