Touairi brothers lead Algeria’s weightlifting success

TARANTO, Italy (MNTV) — Brothers Farès and Aymen Touairi powered Algeria to a strong weightlifting performance at the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, collecting two gold medals and a bronze between them.

Algerian Weightlifting Federation President Kamel Saidi praised the team’s performance, describing the results achieved by the country’s leading lifters as outstanding.

Farès Touairi secured a gold medal in the clean and jerk, adding a major victory to Algeria’s medal tally at the Mediterranean Games. His brother Aymen also claimed gold in the same discipline, further strengthening Algeria’s presence in the weightlifting competition.

The Touairi brothers’ performances were accompanied by a bronze medal, giving the siblings a combined haul of three medals at the Games.

Their results contributed to an increasingly successful campaign for Algeria in Taranto, where the North African delegation has produced strong performances across several individual sports.

Saidi highlighted the quality of the Algerian lifters and their ability to deliver at a major regional competition, with the federation president pointing to the results as evidence of the progress being made in Algerian weightlifting.

The performances in Taranto also build on Algeria’s established strength in weightlifting, a sport in which the country has regularly produced competitors capable of challenging for medals at major international and regional events.

The Mediterranean Games have provided another important platform for Algerian athletes to test themselves against competitors from across the Mediterranean region.

With the Touairi brothers among the medal winners, Algeria has strengthened its overall medal campaign while demonstrating the depth of its talent in weightlifting.
