Iranian media reports no casualties in attack near island that handles most of Iran’s crude oil exports
TEHRAN (MNTV) — A U.S. missile struck an Iranian oil tanker near the strategically important Kharg Island on Saturday, according to Iranian media, as U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran continue to fuel regional tensions.
Iran’s Student News Agency described the tanker as a “small vessel” and said no casualties were reported in the strike.
Further details about the extent of damage to the tanker were not immediately available.
Kharg Island, located in the Persian Gulf, is a critical hub for Iran’s energy sector and handles an estimated 90% to 95% of the country’s crude oil exports.
U.S. President Donald Trump has previously threatened to take control of the island, making military activity around the oil hub particularly significant for Iran’s economy and global energy markets.
Regional tensions have sharply escalated since the United States and Israel began attacks on Iran on Feb. 28.
Tehran has responded with missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and U.S. interests across the region.
Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 concerning freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil-shipping routes.
Implementation of the agreement, however, has stalled amid continuing disagreements over security arrangements in the strategic waterway.
