Dubai artist turns childhood fascination into caricature career

DUBAI, UAE (MNTV) — Dubai-based artist Adeel Saeed has turned a childhood fascination with street drawing into a career creating live caricatures at events across the United Arab Emirates.

Saeed’s interest in caricature began when he was 10 years old in Northern Cyprus, where he regularly watched a street artist working beneath a tree in Nicosia. 

Fascinated by the artist’s ability to transform people’s faces into humorous drawings, Saeed spent hours observing him.

The artist eventually invited the young Saeed to sit down and learn, an encounter that remained with him and later shaped his professional path.

Saeed moved to the UAE alone in 2004 and initially worked in the events industry as a graphic designer and 3D visualizer. He eventually found an opportunity to demonstrate his talent when his employer needed a caricature artist for an event.

Given a pen and paper as an informal test, Saeed quickly drew his boss and secured the assignment. He continued creating caricatures alongside his regular job for about a year before leaving his nine-to-five position to pursue art full time.

More than a decade later, Saeed works at corporate functions, gala dinners, weddings, private parties and other events, producing caricatures in as little as one or two minutes.

He said his speed has improved substantially through years of practice, reducing a process that once took eight or nine minutes to only a fraction of that time.

Unlike conventional portraiture, Saeed said caricature allows him to exaggerate distinctive features and create humorous interpretations intended to make people smile.

Before beginning a drawing, he studies the individual and identifies a prominent feature that can serve as the foundation of the caricature. This could be a person’s eyes, nose, teeth or even a bald head.

Saeed also adapts his approach according to the person being drawn and uses several different styles rather than applying the same treatment to every subject.

He said he particularly enjoys producing exaggerated caricatures that attract the attention of people watching him work. However, he said he generally takes a more flattering approach when drawing women to avoid offending his subjects.

His artistic interests have also extended into darker territory. At one stage, Saeed became deeply interested in drawing zombies and spent considerable time studying horror films, illustrations and special effects.

The fascination became so intense that he said he began experiencing nightmares. Although he developed techniques for creating graphic zombie imagery, he eventually abandoned the specialization because he found that such work was difficult to sell.

Instead, Saeed continues to focus on live caricatures, transforming visitors and event guests into personalized artistic souvenirs within minutes.

For the artist, the career represents the fulfillment of an ambition that began decades ago with a child watching a street artist in Cyprus.

Saeed said he is now able to earn his livelihood from the hobby and passion he developed during childhood, leaving behind the conventional nine-to-five career he once had.
