Rising solar adoption across households and farms helps shield Pakistan from global energy shocks triggered by disruptions in Strait of Hormuz
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (MNTV) — Pakistan’s rapid shift toward solar energy is helping the country absorb the impact of global fuel disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict involving Iran, with millions of households now less dependent on imported energy.
An estimated 25 percent of Pakistani households are using solar power, marking a sharp rise in adoption over recent years. The transition has provided a buffer against soaring fuel prices and supply uncertainties linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large share of global oil shipments passes.
Pakistan remains heavily reliant on external energy supplies, with around 80 percent of its oil imports and nearly all liquefied natural gas shipments routed through the strait. Any prolonged disruption poses risks of power shortages, industrial slowdowns, and rising costs across the economy.
However, a decentralized solar boom—driven largely by households, farmers, and businesses rather than centralized policy—has helped reduce dependence on fuel imports.
Studies indicate that rooftop solar installations have already saved the country billions of dollars in fuel costs over recent years, with further savings expected as adoption expands.
In rural areas, solar-powered irrigation systems have transformed agricultural practices. Farmers who previously relied on diesel-powered pumps are now able to sustain crop production without exposure to fluctuating fuel prices, ensuring more stable incomes despite global volatility.
Urban centers such as Karachi and Lahore have also seen widespread rooftop installations, with middle-class households investing in solar systems to counter rising electricity tariffs and frequent outages.
Many users are able to recover installation costs within a few years, after which electricity generation becomes significantly cheaper.
The growth has been supported by falling global prices of solar panels, particularly imports from China, alongside government policies such as net metering that allow users to sell excess power back to the grid.
Pakistan has emerged as one of the fastest-growing solar markets, with installed capacity expanding dramatically in recent years.
Despite these gains, analysts warn of growing inequality in access to solar energy. High upfront costs mean that lower-income households remain dependent on the national grid, while wealthier users benefit from reduced bills and energy independence.
The shift has also raised concerns about financial pressures on the power sector, as non-solar consumers bear a larger share of system costs.
Experts caution that while solar expansion reduces reliance on imported fuel, it creates new dependencies on foreign technology and supply chains. Still, the ongoing energy transition is increasingly seen as a crucial safeguard, helping Pakistan navigate external shocks and build resilience in an uncertain global energy landscape.
