RCMP Among Six Canadian Police Forces Investigating Emailed Threats to Muslims!
September 28, 2026 — The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is among more than six police forces investigating threats sent to Islamic schools across the country last week, the national police confirmed to local media yesterday.
“Law enforcement agencies are working collaboratively with school leadership to investigate the reported threats and assess all available information,” the RCMP stated in a press release yesterday afternoon.
RCMP’s Northwest Region, which covers the Prairie provinces as well as the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, is also examining the threat. However, it did not explain why it included this region in the investigation. Some senior police officers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, pointed to a section of the note that references an upcoming Alberta referendum, mentioning the threat that Muslims would be “deported or slaughtered” once “Alberta becomes its own nation,” as a possible reason for this inclusion.
Police forces in Ottawa, the Waterloo Region, Peel Region, London, Ontario, and Montreal have confirmed their involvement in the investigation, stating that schools in their jurisdictions received similar threatening notes directed against Muslims.
The Vancouver Police Department also expressed urgent concern and has increased patrols throughout the city.
In their release, the RCMP noted: “Investigators have no information to suggest an imminent threat; however, members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant.”
A spokesperson for the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC), Nabil Sultan, said the same anonymous email was sent to schools in Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec within 24 hours.
The email was shared with local media and was signed by a “Citizen Vigilante.” It threatens the “slaughter” of Muslims and declares that Canada will be “Islam-free.”
Sultan, whose child attends a MAC school, said he was devastated after reading the letter and that MAC has hired security personnel to ensure students’ safety.
He noted that the organization is accustomed to receiving threatening and Islamophobic emails, but this is the first instance where non-profit schools have been directly targeted.
He attributes this rise to increasing Islamophobia in Canada, citing Statistics Canada data that reveals police-reported hate crimes against Muslims surged by more than 170 percent between 2020 and 2024.
Sultan remarked that students are feeling “scared and vulnerable” as they walk past security and police officers on their way to class, raising difficult questions about who is considered a Canadian and who is labeled an outsider.
“All of the lessons we try to impart to our children in these schools emphasize that they are equal to any other Canadian, with equal rights and responsibilities. Threats like this make them question their belonging due to their faith and the way they pray,” Sultan added. He emphasized the need for Canada to address the “environment of Islamophobia and xenophobia” that fosters threats against Muslims and other visible minorities.
Closer to home in the Greater Toronto Area, the Peel Region police confirmed they are aware of the letter containing “hate-motivated threats” against Islamic institutions. They have increased overnight patrols near mosques and schools and assured the public they will continue these efforts until the situation is resolved satisfactorily.
