Ossoff slams Trump over El Salvador prison plan
Sen. Jon Ossoff is urging the Trump administration to reject El Salvador’s offer to jail American citizens.
He warned that U.S. law does not allow such deportations and called El Salvador’s prisons dangerous, citing reports of violence, overcrowding, and human rights abuses.
The proposal came after Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to El Salvador.
The country’s President Nayib Bukele suggested the U.S. could pay to house convicted criminals in his country’s high-security Terrorism Confinement Center.
The mega-prison, built for more than 40,000 inmates, has drawn global criticism.
Despite legal concerns, President Donald Trump called the offer “very generous” and said he would send Americans there “in a heartbeat” if allowed.
Ossoff, in a letter to Rubio and Attorney General Pam Bondi, urged them to reject the idea publicly.
Critics argue the plan is illegal and inhumane.
