Nantes goalkeeper’s gesture highlights Ramadan solidarity in French football league

NANTES (MNTV) — A moment of quiet solidarity during a French top-flight clash has drawn praise after a goalkeeper appeared to help his fasting teammates observe Ramadan.
During FC Nantes’ 2-0 victory over Le Havre in France’s Ligue 1 on Sunday, goalkeeper Anthony Lopes went to ground midway through the match with no opponent nearby as the ball rolled out of play.
Under league regulations set by the Ligue de Football Professionnel and the French Football Federation, formal pauses in play for religious observance are not permitted.
However, while outfield players must leave the pitch if injured, goalkeepers may receive treatment on the field.
As Lopes was attended to by medical staff, several Nantes players observing Ramadan briefly stepped to the touchline, where they were seen taking water and dates to break their fast at sunset.
Lopes then rose slowly, allowing a few extra moments before play resumed.
The gesture comes as other European leagues have introduced accommodations for fasting players.
The Premier League began allowing sunset breaks during Ramadan in 2021, with Germany’s Bundesliga adopting a similar approach a year later.
Ramadan, which began this year on February 17 following the sighting of the crescent moon, is a sacred month in Islam during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.
Nantes’ win was crucial in their battle to avoid relegation, lifting morale at a pivotal stage of the season.
Yet beyond the result, the brief pause on the pitch stood out as a symbol of team unity, a reminder that respect and camaraderie can find space even within the tightest of rulebooks.
