Bomb threat targets North Carolina mosque; CAIR demands hate crime investigation
Federal authorities asked to investigate incident as part of pattern affecting religious institutions
RALEIGH, United States (MNTV) – A bomb threat targeting the Islamic Association of Raleigh prompted emergency police response and evacuation procedures early this week, with the North Carolina chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations calling for a full hate crime investigation.
Police arrived within minutes of a 911 call warning of a bomb threat directed at the mosque. Officials coordinated with mosque security teams to clear the campus and confirm safety, allowing normal activities to resume following the all-clear.
CAIR NC representative Al Rieder stated that the organization is requesting that law enforcement treat the incident as a potential hate crime, emphasizing that threats against places of worship warrant maximum investigative attention.
“Threats targeting religious institutions are serious matters that must be investigated thoroughly,” Rieder said in a statement. “This incident is part of a broader pattern affecting faith communities.”
Rieder cited additional recent incidents in North Carolina, including hate graffiti at another mosque that community members removed, and reported appearances of white supremacist and neo-Nazi flyers in public spaces in Clayton. Similar antisemitic propaganda has appeared in Charlotte, according to community reports.
Data tracked by civil rights organizations documents patterns of incidents targeting religious institutions over extended periods, with frequency varying based on geopolitical and domestic political developments.
Law enforcement officials have not yet made public statements regarding investigation status or preliminary findings related to the Raleigh incident.
Religious institutions across multiple faith traditions have increased security measures in recent years, according to facility managers and security consultants interviewed for previous reporting on this topic.
The incident remains under investigation by local and federal authorities.
