Muslim auto-rickshaw driver beaten to death after parking dispute in India

NEW DELHI, India (MNTV) — A Muslim auto-rickshaw driver has died after he was allegedly beaten by a group of men during an argument over a parking space in India’s eastern state of Bihar, triggering protests by residents and renewed scrutiny of deadly mob assaults arising from minor disputes.

The victim, Jamil Akhtar, was attacked on Friday evening in Sitamarhi district after parking his vehicle outside a roadside shop, according to police. He suffered critical injuries and died in hospital the following day.

Akhtar’s family alleged that four men assaulted him during the confrontation and identified the accused as Raja Kumar, Batto Kumar, Sonu Kumar and another unidentified person. Police have registered a criminal case, arrested one suspect, Sonu Kumar, and launched a search for the remaining accused.

Residents staged protests after the killing, accusing authorities of delaying the registration of the case and demanding the immediate arrest of everyone named by the victim’s family.

Akhtarul Iman, the Bihar president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and a state legislator, called for a fast-track trial, the maximum punishment for those convicted and compensation of 5 million Indian rupees ($51,700) for Akhtar’s family.

Police said investigators are recording witness statements and examining other evidence to determine the sequence of events and establish individual responsibility for the fatal assault.

Although investigators have so far described the attack as stemming from a dispute over parking, the killing has renewed concern over the frequency with which seemingly minor disagreements in India escalate into deadly mob violence. 

Human rights groups have also documented a broader pattern of attacks targeting Muslims in recent years, particularly in states governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, though authorities have not indicated that religion was a motive in Akhtar’s killing.
