Morocco reaps over $1.1B economic windfall from AFCON 2025
Tournament boosts GDP growth, jobs, infrastructure readiness ahead of 2030 World Cup
RABAT, Morocco (MNTV) — Morocco has recorded more than €1 billion ($1.17 billion) in economic gains from hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with international assessments describing the tournament as the most financially successful edition in the competition’s history.
Beyond football, AFCON 2025 acted as a major economic catalyst, boosting domestic demand by an estimated 25 percent during the tournament period, reported Morocco World News.
Official figures indicate that nearly 3,000 Moroccan companies participated in supply chains and logistics, injecting liquidity into small and medium-sized enterprises and strengthening local business activity.
The tournament delivered a measurable macroeconomic impact, contributing to an increase in Morocco’s GDP growth rate to 4.5 percent. Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour told parliament the event “revitalised the economy,” accelerating consumption, investment, and the completion of long-delayed infrastructure projects.
Mezzour said preparations for AFCON compressed development timelines significantly, with projects originally scheduled over a decade completed in just two years.
He described the tournament as a large-scale operational test of logistics, security, and event management, effectively positioning Morocco for future global sporting events, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
International reports show that infrastructure readiness — covering stadiums, transport networks, hospitality facilities, and telecommunications — reached nearly 80 percent of the standards required for the 2030 World Cup.
AFCON 2025 also generated an estimated 100,000 direct and indirect jobs, supporting employment across hospitality, logistics, and event services.
The tournament boosted tourism and international visibility, attracting thousands of fans from across Africa and Europe. Moroccan airports handled record passenger volumes toward the end of 2025 following urgent upgrades to reception systems, security procedures, and ground services at major hubs.
Authorities said the smooth handling of unprecedented air traffic demonstrated Morocco’s capacity to manage large-scale international events.
Extensive global media exposure and heightened online interest are expected to translate into sustained tourism growth beyond the tournament.
By combining infrastructure development, economic expansion, job creation, and global exposure, AFCON 2025 has reinforced Morocco’s standing as a regional hub for sports, commerce, and soft power.
