GTA Extreme Weather Alert! Tonight Will Be the Coldest Since January 2019
The Greater Toronto Area is preparing for a harsh weekend of winter weather, featuring extreme cold and a snowstorm that could bring up to 30 centimetres of snow.
Here’s a timeline of what to expect, based on Environment Canada’s information.
Caution: Meteorologists warn that this is a developing weather system, and conditions may change unexpectedly. These cold snaps can be dangerous, so it’s essential to limit time spent outdoors. If you must go outside, dress warmly and check on vulnerable neighbors, especially those without reliable heating.
** Timeline: **
Friday: Flurries are expected to begin in the afternoon and taper off early in the evening, but treacherously low temperatures will follow. Environment Canada has issued a “Yellow” weather warning, with wind chills expected to reach -30 to -33 degrees Celsius.
Parents should pay extra attention to their children’s clothing, as kids may not realize how cold it is while indoors. Exposed skin could lead to frostbite within minutes at these temperatures, according to the national weather agency’s advisory.
Saturday: The same weather system will persist, with an extreme cold warning in effect for the morning hours. Although bright sunshine is likely, don’t let that fool you; it will still feel like -30 degrees Celsius in the morning and a brisk -18 degrees Celsius in the afternoon.
Snow is expected to begin falling after midnight across Lake Ontario as a larger storm system approaches from the east.
Sunday: Current forecasts indicate the main storm will arrive around 11 a.m. and last through most of the day, potentially dropping 20 to 30 centimetres of snow. Light snow may continue overnight. If significant snowfall occurs on Sunday, snow-clearing efforts will likely still be underway by Monday morning.
Snow could still be falling by 7 a.m., which is a distinct possibility.
Monday: Commuting will be challenging. Exercise extreme caution while driving on highways and side streets, as black ice is likely to form on road surfaces. Patience is crucial during these times, so drive slowly. A few extra minutes may not make a significant difference.
Take care and stay safe. Insha’Allah.
