‘Border 2’ barred across Gulf over anti-Pakistan portrayal
Sunny Deol-led war drama opens widely in India but faces bans in multiple Gulf states over sensitive content
NEW DELHI, India (MNTV) — Sunny Deol’s Hindi war drama Border 2 was released across India on Friday but has been banned in several Gulf countries due to its perceived anti-Pakistan narrative.
The film opened on more than 4,000 screens nationwide, marking one of the widest Hindi releases in recent years, with producers targeting the Republic Day holiday weekend for strong box office performance.
However, media reports confirmed that Border 2 will not be released in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, or the United Arab Emirates, where films viewed as politically sensitive or anti-Pakistan often fail to secure screening approval.
According to industry sources, the producers submitted the film for certification in the Gulf region, but clearance was denied, similar to the recent ban on Ranveer Singh’s film Dhurandhar.
Border 2 is a sequel to JP Dutta’s 1997 film Border and revisits the 1971 India-Pakistan war, depicting coordinated operations by the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy.
India’s Central Board of Film Certification cleared the film with a U/A (13+) rating, while its runtime stands at three hours and 16 minutes, making it one of the longest Indian war films in recent years.
