Mauritania joins North African football union
CAF approves country’s move to UNAF, reshaping regional competition pathways and development opportunities
NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (MNTV) — Mauritania has officially changed its regional football affiliation, with the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) Executive Committee approving the country’s transition from the West African football zone to the Union of North African Football (UNAF).
The move, ratified by CAF during an executive committee meeting in Rabat, Morocco, responds to a longstanding request from the Mauritanian Football Federation (FFRIM) and represents a significant strategic shift for the nation’s football landscape.
As a result of the reassignment, Mauritania becomes the sixth member of UNAF, joining established North African associations including Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya.
The decision also prompts a reorganization of the West African Football Union (UFOA-A) zone, which will now comprise eight nations: Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Cape Verde.
Under the new affiliation, Mauritanian clubs and national teams are expected to compete in UNAF regional competitions and take part in its training and exchange programs.
The affiliation is set to offer exposure to higher-level opponents and development frameworks that reflect North African football dynamics.
Officials from the Mauritanian Football Federation have described the shift as a major step toward enhancing the country’s football standards and fostering stronger ties with North African counterparts.
