Mamdani acknowledges historic win as New York’s next mayor

NEW YORK (MNTV) — Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic socialist who made history as the first Muslim and South Asian elected mayor of New York City, has indirectly acknowledged his victory after major media outlets projected him as the winner.
In a post on X, Mamdani shared a video showing a subway car’s doors opening as the announcer says, “The next and last stop is City Hall,” a message widely seen as his nod to the results.
The Associated Press and NBC News both called the race for Mamdani late Tuesday, following a record turnout in the city’s closely watched election.
Supporters at Mamdani’s campaign headquarters in Brooklyn are gathering in celebration as they await the mayor-elect’s victory speech.
Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa congratulated Mamdani but warned he would “mobilise” his supporters if the mayor-elect seeks to “implement socialism” or “render our police weak and impotent.”
“We’re not only organising, but we are mobilising, and we will become the mayor-elect and his supporters’ worst enemies,” Sliwa said.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer hailed the outcome as part of a broader Democratic wave in Tuesday’s elections.
“Tonight’s results are a repudiation of the Trump agenda,” Schumer said in a statement. “The cruelty, chaos, and greed that define MAGA radicalism were firmly rejected by the American people.”
President Donald Trump, meanwhile, attributed Republicans’ losses to his absence from the ballot and the ongoing government shutdown.
“‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’ according to Pollsters,” Trump posted on Truth Social, without citing any specific source.
Democrats swept several key races on Tuesday, winning governorships in New Jersey and Virginia alongside Mamdani’s decisive victory in New York City.
