Maldives Islamic Bank wins global award for advancing women
International recognition honors bank for expanding career opportunities for women and creating pathways for female employees to reach leadership positions
MALÉ, Maldives (MNTV) — Maldives Islamic Bank has received an international award for its efforts to help women advance professionally and take on leadership positions, highlighting the growing role of women in the country’s Islamic financial sector.
The bank received the WOMANi Leadership Award for Career Advancement 2026 from Cambridge IFA, an international financial services intelligence organization specializing in Islamic banking and finance.
The award recognizes institutions that create opportunities for women to progress professionally and reach senior positions. Maldives Islamic Bank, or MIB, was honored for developing an environment in which female employees can advance into leadership roles across different areas of its operations.
The recognition is particularly significant in Islamic finance, an industry that has expanded rapidly beyond Muslim-majority countries and encompasses banking and other financial services structured around Islamic principles, including prohibitions on interest and requirements governing risk and investment.
Five female leaders from MIB were also selected for the WOMANi Report 2026, Cambridge IFA’s annual publication recognizing women making significant contributions to the global Islamic finance industry.
They were recognized for their contributions to financial services, leadership initiatives and work strengthening Islamic finance in the Maldives.
MIB said the international recognition reflected the contribution of its female employees to the bank’s growth and operations and pledged to continue developing professionals and providing leadership opportunities regardless of gender.
The award also puts a spotlight on women’s participation in the Maldives’ expanding Islamic finance sector, which operates alongside the country’s conventional banking system.
MIB, which began operations in 2011, provides Sharia-compliant retail, corporate and business banking services and has played a central role in expanding Islamic banking in the Indian Ocean island nation.
The bank said it would continue efforts to empower women across different levels of the organization and create pathways for employees to move into leadership roles.
