Kuwait-style Yemeni coffee culture arrives in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, United States (MNTV) — The Kansas City metropolitan area has welcomed its first Yemeni coffee shop, offering traditional brews and social customs rooted in Gulf-region coffee culture long familiar in countries such as Kuwait.

Mocha Point Yemeni Coffee Co. opened this week in Overland Park, drawing large crowds during its soft launch and marking a milestone for residents who previously traveled hours to find authentic Yemeni coffee.

Yemeni coffee is known for its earthy, bold flavor profile and frequent use of spices such as cardamom, along with specialty drinks like Adeni chai and Yemeni-style lattes. Coffee historians trace the origins of brewed coffee to Mocha, Yemen, a port city that gave rise to the term “mocha.”

Customers at the opening described the café as a long-awaited cultural space, praising both the drinks and the atmosphere centered on sitting, sharing and socializing rather than quick takeaways.

The shop offers individual beverages as well as large pots of traditional coffee and tea intended for families and groups. Its menu also includes pastries, flavored espresso drinks and herbal teas.

Mocha Point was founded by brothers Ali and Addel Othman, who opened their first location in Missouri after struggling to find similar coffeehouses in the United States. 

They say interest in Yemeni coffee has surged nationwide in recent years, attracting customers beyond Arab communities.

Two additional Yemeni coffee shops are expected to open soon in Johnson County, reflecting growing demand for Middle Eastern coffee culture in the region.
