Israel escalates prison abuses as detainees face torture, deaths surge

WEST BANK, Palestine (MNTV) — Palestinian rights monitors have sounded the alarm over what they describe as a dramatic and systematic escalation in abuses against detainees held in Israeli prisons, warning that conditions now amount to grave violations of international law.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights said thousands of Palestinians are being held in conditions that are “harsh and life-threatening,” with widespread practices including torture, starvation, medical neglect and enforced disappearance. The group warned that these actions may constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity, carried out with impunity under the protection of Israeli authorities and sustained by continued US backing.

According to documented testimonies, detainees—including women, children, journalists and medical workers—have been subjected to severe physical and psychological abuse. Accounts detail beatings, prolonged sleep deprivation, denial of basic medical care and instances of sexual violence, painting a picture of a detention system designed to break prisoners rather than uphold any legal standard.

The situation has been exacerbated by widespread incommunicado detention, with many prisoners denied access to legal counsel, family members and even the International Committee of the Red Cross. The fate of hundreds remains unknown, raising serious concerns about enforced disappearances within Israeli custody.

Since the escalation of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza in October 2023, arrest operations have intensified dramatically, with civilians across the occupied Palestinian territories increasingly targeted. Current figures indicate that around 9,600 Palestinians are being held in Israeli prisons, including dozens of women and hundreds of children.

A significant number of detainees from Gaza are being held without charge under controversial legal provisions, effectively stripping them of due process rights. Rights groups argue that such measures are being used to legitimize arbitrary detention on a mass scale.

The death toll inside Israeli detention facilities continues to rise, with at least 89 Palestinians confirmed dead in custody. Observers warn the actual number is likely higher, given restrictions on access and transparency. These deaths, combined with reports of torture and neglect, have intensified concerns over systematic abuse within the prison system.

Adding to the alarm, authorities in Gaza have reported the return of hundreds of unidentified bodies earlier this year, many of them severely decomposed or mutilated. The condition of these remains has made identification extremely difficult, particularly as Israeli restrictions continue to block the entry of essential forensic equipment into the territory.

The rights group also condemned new Israeli legislation that expands the use of the death penalty against Palestinian detainees, warning that it risks formalizing what they describe as extrajudicial executions under a legal framework.

Critics argue that these developments reflect a broader pattern of dehumanization and institutionalized violence, enabled by a lack of international accountability. Despite mounting evidence, meaningful action from global powers remains absent, reinforcing a climate of impunity.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights has called on the international community to impose sanctions and an arms embargo on Israel, urging immediate intervention to halt what it describes as systematic abuses. It also appealed to the International Criminal Court to open investigations into the treatment of Palestinian detainees and pursue accountability against those responsible.

The continued expansion of such practices, rights groups warn, underscores an entrenched system of repression that operates beyond the reach of law, leaving thousands of detainees exposed to unchecked violence and neglect.
