Iraq prepares for rare overlap of Ramadan and Lent
Rare calendar convergence highlights interfaith coexistence as Muslims and Christians observe overlapping fasting seasons across the country
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Iraqis from different religious communities are preparing for days of worship and reflection as a rare calendar convergence brings Christian Lent and the holy month of Ramadan close together this year.
Eastern Catholic churches began their Great Lent on Feb 16, marking a 40-day fasting period that is among the most significant spiritual seasons in the Christian calendar.
Meanwhile, the Sunni Endowment Office in Iraq and the Ministry of Endowments in the Kurdistan Region announced that Ramadan will begin on Wednesday, with an official declaration also expected from the Supreme Religious Authority in Najaf.
The overlap means that large portions of Lent and Ramadan will coincide in the coming weeks, according to Iraqi News.
This phenomenon occurs periodically due to differences between the Julian and Gregorian calendars used by various churches and the lunar calendar that determines the Islamic holy month.
The timing underscores Iraq’s long-standing tradition of religious coexistence, with markets and public spaces across cities witnessing preparations for both occasions. Families and communities are observing their respective traditions side by side.
Many Iraqis view the convergence as an opportunity to reinforce messages of peace, solidarity, and stability during a spiritually significant period for both Muslims and Christians.
