Iraq, Jordan to renew cross-border electricity deal
Third amendment to energy agreement to power Rutba district for another year under regional interconnection project
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Iraq’s Cabinet has authorized the Ministry of Electricity to sign a third amendment to its electricity supply agreement with Jordan, extending power delivery to the Rutba district in western Anbar for another 12 months, the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.
The updated deal, part of the ongoing Iraq–Jordan electricity interconnection project, will enable the supply of electricity to Rutba starting September 27, 2025, under an arrangement with Jordan’s National Electric Power Company (NEPCO).
NEPCO Director General Sufyan Batayneh confirmed that Jordan had approved Iraq’s request to extend the energy supply, noting that the partnership continues to strengthen bilateral energy cooperation.
Jordan began transmitting 150 megawatts of power to Iraq in August, following completion of the project’s second phase.
The first phase, launched in early 2024, connected Jordan’s Risha power plant with Iraq’s Rutba substation through a 132-kilovolt transmission line.
Officials said further connection stages could raise the power transfer capacity to as much as 500 megawatts, enhancing grid stability and energy security in both countries.
