Former House speaker calls withdrawal threats 'shortsighted' and a gift to Putin
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) – Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has pushed back against President Donald Trump’s threats to withdraw the United States from NATO, stressing that no president can leave the alliance without congressional approval and describing the threats as “shortsighted” and beneficial to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Trump’s threats to leave are not only shortsighted, they’re a gift to Vladimir Putin,” Pelosi wrote on X. “The law is clear: No President can withdraw from NATO without Congressional approval.”
Under a law passed in 2023, the president cannot unilaterally withdraw from NATO without a two-thirds Senate majority or an act of Congress.
The remarks come as Trump has repeatedly attacked the alliance, calling it a “paper tiger” over its response to the Strait of Hormuz crisis, branding member states “cowards” and saying leaving the alliance was “beyond reconsideration.” NATO was founded 77 years ago by the United States and its allies as a collective defense and democratic alliance.
