Indonesian classic Olenka to reach global audience in English debut
Translation of Olenka revives legacy of acclaimed writer Budi Darma and spotlights Indonesia’s literary voice
JAKARTA, Indonesia / BLOOMINGTON, United States (MNTV) — An acclaimed Indonesian literary work is set to reach a global readership this year, as Olenka by celebrated writer Budi Darma is published in English for the first time in July, reports IDS News.
The novel, widely regarded as Darma’s most prominent work, traces the psychological journey of a man, Fanton Drummond, whose fascination with a mysterious woman, Olenka Danton, spirals into obsession and disappearance. The story was inspired by a fleeting encounter Darma had with a woman in an elevator during his student years in the United States.
Darma, known for his distinct absurdist style, drew heavily on his experiences abroad while studying at Indiana University in Bloomington, where he completed his doctorate in 1980. His time there also produced the short story collection People from Bloomington, a series of works exploring isolation and human relationships in unfamiliar settings.
Over a prolific career, Darma authored more than 38 works, including novels, essays and short stories, earning recognition as one of Indonesia’s most distinctive literary voices. His writing often explored themes of loneliness, identity and the surreal dimensions of everyday life.
According to Tiffany Tsao, who translated Darma’s works into English, Olenka stands out for its experimental style, including its use of collage elements such as newspaper clippings woven into the narrative.
Tsao said she was drawn to Darma’s writing because of its “funny” and “weird” qualities, and began translating his earlier collection in 2019 with the aim of bringing Indonesian literature to a wider audience. “Through the translations into English people can enjoy these works and these authors.”
She noted that Darma’s work challenges conventional expectations of Indonesian literature, which is often narrowly viewed through the lens of local settings or political themes.
Translation also posed technical challenges, particularly Darma’s use of Javanese expressions within Indonesian text. While these elements were not always retained in English, Tsao said they contribute to the cultural texture of the original work.
“Those little Javanese words are sprinkled here and there in the texts, and I like to think it would have made most readers who are from that background feel like it’s a bit more homey, a bit more familiar, a bit more local,” she said.
Tsao maintained a close professional relationship with Darma, recalling his warmth and continued interest in her work and family. “It was really nice to revisit those times with him, because he has such fond memories,” she said, referring to his years in Bloomington.
Darma died in August 2021 at the age of 84 due to COVID-19, shortly before the English translation of People from Bloomington was published. His death added a sense of urgency to preserving and sharing his literary contributions.
“I felt a very strong sense of duty and responsibility around the work, because Budi Darma wasn’t there anymore,” Tsao said.
The English edition of Olenka is scheduled for release on July 21, 2026, marking a significant moment for Indonesian literature as it continues to gain recognition on the global stage.
