US strike near Iranian children’s cancer hospital draws war crimes accusations
US attack near Ahvaz hospital forces evacuation of 211 child cancer patients as Iran accuses Washington of violating international law and targeting civilian infrastructure
TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — Iran has accused the United States of committing a “barbaric” and “cowardly” war crime after a US strike landed near a children’s cancer hospital in the southwestern city of Ahvaz, forcing the emergency evacuation of 211 young patients undergoing treatment.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the attack caused panic among children receiving chemotherapy and likened it to Israel’s repeated attacks on healthcare facilities in Gaza. He said targeting or endangering hospitals constituted a grave violation of international humanitarian law.
Hospital officials said the explosion occurred so close to Shahid Baghaei Specialized Hospital that staff initially believed the medical facility itself had been struck.
Doctors and medical workers rushed to evacuate critically ill children, including patients on ventilators, oxygen support and intravenous treatment, to safer locations.
Hospital director Reza Bazar said the nearby strike rendered the facility inoperable, while medical staff described chaotic scenes as families carried children from the hospital during the emergency evacuation.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the attack as a blatant breach of the United Nations Charter and international law, accusing Washington of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure.
Iranian officials also criticized what they described as double standards by Western governments that advocate human rights while remaining silent over attacks affecting medical facilities.
The United States did not specifically comment on the hospital incident but confirmed it had carried out another wave of military strikes across Iran.
President Donald Trump has warned that the US could target additional Iranian infrastructure if Tehran refuses to resume negotiations, while Iran has threatened retaliatory attacks against US interests and regional infrastructure.
The latest strike has heightened fears of a wider regional conflict as international concern grows over the protection of civilians and medical facilities during the escalating hostilities.
