Indonesia to make English mandatory from third grade starting in 2027
Government preparing large-scale teacher training programs to support nationwide implementation of policy
LOMBOK, Indonesia (MNTV) – Indonesia will introduce English as a compulsory subject for elementary school students beginning in the 2027 academic year, representing a significant shift in the country’s educational approach, reports Jakarta Globe.
“Starting in 2027, English will become a mandatory subject beginning from the third grade of elementary school,” announced Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti.
The ministry is currently preparing various supporting measures to ensure nationwide implementation, including comprehensive English language training programs for elementary school teachers.
“We are now preparing how the program can be implemented through English-language training for elementary school teachers,” Abdul explained. “The training will be provided gradually to elementary school teachers across Indonesia.”
The policy forms part of the government’s broader initiative to strengthen education quality and equip students with 21st-century competencies from an early age.
“With earlier English proficiency, Indonesian students are expected to become more competitive on the global stage,” Abdul stated.
The minister emphasized that developing human resources—particularly ensuring teacher readiness—remains the government’s top priority for successful policy implementation.
